First of all, let me explain the name "Selkie"
selkie. sel·kie. also sil·kie. noun.
"A creature or spirit in Scottish and Irish folklore that has the form of a seal but can also assume human form. Alternative forms[edit] saelkie, selky, seilkie, sejlki, shelky, silkey, silkie, sulky"
A typical folk-tale is that of a man who steals a female selkie's skin, finds her naked on the sea shore, and compels her to become his wife. But the wife will spend her time in captivity longing for the sea, her true home, and will often be seen gazing longingly at the ocean. Once she discovers her skin, she will immediately return to the sea.
Filled with color, exuberance and power, this collection is for the Selkie women everywhere, setting themselves free.
I started this brand because I wanted something that would be a true expression of my heart- doll like, dreamy, colorful and memorable. I couldn't find romantic, fanciful clothing in my size- in fact as a size 12 I would even cry in dressing rooms from shame, realising most magical dresses in the largest size might not go over my hips. How could they only offer up to a size 10!? I was ready to drop $500 on their brand, perhaps become a loyal customer and they lost me in an instant.
My goal with Selkie is even if you don't like the style or fit, you can put it on, admire yourself (cause it fits without crying) and either love it or change! This is a basic shopping RIGHT! My other goal with Selkie is to continue to expand my size range. The more the company grows, the more money I can invest in what I truly believe every, single brand should offer!
As you continue to define what you want out of life and how to get it, clothing can be a huge help in how you present yourself, how you appear to the world, the jobs you get and the people you attract! Clothing is power. I started Selkie to offer women a sense of power through style, albeit pastel and poofy, but wearing exuberant clothing can be life changing! People will see you as outgoing, daring and unique. Things that you already ARE!
