October, Libra Season

Flirty Libra's season picks up where Virgo season's grounding, Big Practical Energy left off. Now that we've gone through that deep, reflective period, we, as Cyndi Lauper would say, just want to have fu-un. A cardinal sign, Libra is known for initiating things, and its season incidentally commences on the Southern Hemisphere's spring equinox, heralding the true start of spring. Astrologically speaking, it is a chance for those metaphorical seeds you've been planting to flourish across all areas of your life, especially where romance and self-love is concerned. As mentioned earlier, Libra is ruled by Venus, the planet of love, beauty and abundance, and this is set to manifest in multiple ways, most notably by helping to counter the negative impact of Mars Retrograde, which this year falls in Aries—Libra's polar opposite sign. And while the Libra has reputation for, at times, being superficial, the Scales are also a symbol of justice and balance, and relentless in its pursuit of fairness—something it will imbue in all of us during its season, which is exactly what we need with everything that is going on in the world.

According to Narayana Montúfar, senior astrologer for SunSigns.com, Libra season 2020 is going to help us navigate the increasingly uncertain world around us."Libra season is all about finding balance within as we tactfully and gracefully relate to the world around us," she told Refinery 29, adding that the season will "send some restoring energy our way".During this time, Venus' romantic inclinations may cause you to find yourself feeling a little more flirty than usual, which could propel your love life forwards. Whether it's feeling ready to get back on the dating apps, or making your new relationship Instagram official, it's a great time to put past fears and dating mistakes behind you and dip a toe (or dive) back into the (socially distanced) scene. And it's not all about romantic love. "Thou must practise self-love" is a core Libra Commandment (right next to: "Thou must hold thy tongue while on the wines"). Whether you've been neglecting the self-care department or not, you may find yourself adding 'romantic' touches to your daily life, just for your fine self. This could manifest in a number of ways, from buying pretty flowers and candles to dress up your WFH desk, to splashing out on expensive skincare (luxury + beauty = Libra's jam), or giving your wardrobe a much-needed spring refresh (butter yellow is going to be big).Of course, as we said earlier, despite all appearances, Libra is not just about the superficial. During this season you'll likely find your intuition heightened, which may actually turn some of those Venusian tendencies towards self-care into meaningful, much-needed acts of self-love, like seeking professional helping if you've been struggling with a mental health, or swapping out those high-intensity workouts that are stressing your body for something gentle like Yin yoga. All signs will get to feel Libra season's good vibes, but they will be particularly strong for Gemini, Virgo and Pisces.

In the US October can feel very nostalgic, on the streets houses transform into haunted manors, Pumpkins and big bags of candy fill the grocery stores, Spices and candles swirl in the air, and the leaves begin to brown. It's a fun time to re visit Fall movies of our youth or curl up with a great book. One actress in particular for me represents all things nostalgically fall and that's Christina Ricci. She is surely one of the 90's favorite Halloween queens.

1. Mermaids

Mermaids is a coming-of-age tale with a difference. Set in small-town America in 1963, it tells the story of the nomadic Flax family: young single mother Rachel (Cher), nine-year-old water-baby Kate (Christina Ricci) and 15-year-old Charlotte (Winona Ryder), who is grappling with the things teenagers grapple with – identity, sexuality, shoes – as she searches for herself and her place in the world. But in a twist on the genre, Rachel, who was only 16 when she had Charlotte, is inching towards her own enlightenment. Both mother and daughter grow up over the course of the film, because and in spite of each other.

Unapologetic, independent and sexually liberated – qualities rarely seen in women in films set in this era – Rachel packs up their lives and relocates every time she has a breakup. And Rachel has a lot of breakups. By the time they arrive in Eastport, Massachusetts at the film’s commencement, they’ve moved 18 times in 15 years. As opposed to running away from one’s problems, Rachel claims moving is a form of empowerment. “Life is change,” she makes the girls say with her. “Death is dwelling on the past and staying in one place too long.”

2. The Addams Family

While she's gone on to have a long and successful career in Hollywood, Wednesday Addams, which she began playing at the age of 10, is still Ricci's defining role, and she's totally OK with that.

"I feel very inextricably bound to her, because I feel, like, who can say how much influence being that person at that age for the amount of time that I was her, the amount of positive reinforcement from playing that character," she told The A.V. Club. "It's like a chicken-or-egg debate: Did I influence her as a character, or did she as a character influence my personality?"

3.Casper

Christina Ricci was only 15 when she starred in the ‘friendly ghost’ movie as Katherine ‘Kat’ Harvey, opposite Bill Pullman. ET sat down with Ricci in 1995 to talk about the movie, awkward teen years, and growing up in the spotlight.

“I'm still going through my awkward stage and that's OK,” Ricci said back then. “I don't have to be perfect. No one’s perfect at 15 or any other age. It's just me, and if I'm awkward or ugly or whatever, it's just what I am.”

Wise words from a (definitely not ugly) young teen.

These days, we think nothing of entirely CG characters not only appearing in movies but starring in them. Films like Avatar and Warcraft have as many CG characters in them as live actors. In 1995, it was still a very novel concept-- and it was just one of the many ways that Casper was a lot more cutting-edge than it gets credit for, years before the likes of Gollum or Dobby.

In fact, Casper has one very impressive distinction in that regard-- it is considered the first feature-length film to have a CG character as a lead. Sure, Christina Ricci and Bill Pullman get top billing, but it's obvious that Casper is the star of the movie.

The Rules of Magic

For the Owens family, love is a curse that began in 1680, when Maria Owens was charged with witchery for loving the wrong man.

Hundreds of years later, in New York City at the cusp of the sixties, when the whole world is about to change, Susanna Owens knows that her three children are dangerously unique. Difficult Franny, with skin as pale as milk and blood red hair, shy and beautiful Jet, who can read other people’s thoughts, and charismatic Vincent, who began looking for trouble on the day he could walk.

From the start Susanna sets down rules for her children: No walking in the moonlight, no red shoes, no wearing black, no cats, no crows, no candles, no books about magic. And most importantly, never, ever, fall in love. But when her children visit their Aunt Isabelle, in the small Massachusetts town where the Owens family has been blamed for everything that has ever gone wrong, they uncover family secrets and begin to understand the truth of who they are. Yet, the children cannot escape love even if they try, just as they cannot escape the pains of the human heart. The two beautiful sisters will grow up to be the memorable aunts in Practical Magic, while Vincent, their beloved brother, will leave an unexpected legacy.

Alice Hoffman delivers “fairy-tale promise with real-life struggle” (The New York Times Book Review) in a story how the only remedy for being human is to be true to yourself. Thrilling and exquisite, real and fantastical, The Rules of Magic is “irresistible…the kind of book you race through, then pause at the last forty pages, savoring your final moments with the characters” (USA TODAY, 4/4 stars).
